Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of ACTH (4-10), developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Research has investigated its effects on BDNF and NGF expression, neuroplasticity, cognitive function, and neuroprotection in ischaemic and neurodegenerative models. Semax is registered as a pharmaceutical agent in Russia for cognitive impairment and stroke recovery. It does not hold MHRA or FDA approval. Studies have demonstrated its rapid CNS penetration and activation of the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt signalling pathways. Supplied as lyophilised powder, independently tested to ≥98% purity by HPLC.
